Political Campaigning with Social media

Social media platforms is changing the way people are doing political campaigning completely .In Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign we see how social media has became a crucial tool for political campaigning. Barack Obama was the first presidential candidate to effectively use social media as a major campaign strategy. When Obama first announced his presidency in 2007 Twitter had just started and the first iphone did not even come out yet. Four year later in the run up to the 2012 presidential election there was lots of speculation about the impact of social media around this time. Obama was the first social media president because he had the expertise on his team and Romeny and McCain did not achieve the traction the Democrats did with political campaigning with social media tools.

Obama dominated social media space because he understood how networks worked. For example, Obama logged twice as many Facebook “Likes” and nearly 20 times as many re-tweets a Romney. Here are some things that Obama’s campaign kept in mind while doing political campaigning:

  1. Consistency: Consistency does not mean to make sure you always post the same thing every time you use a social media outlet it means to post at the same frequency you usually do. If your campaign is always tweeting, blogging, posting, you want to keep up with its regular basis.
  2. Platform Lingo: Platforms all have a different lingo. A common mistake is people tend to post the same message across all social media handles. This is a misunderstanding because all people have different reasons why people use them. It is important to keep in mind when making a post to make sure you connect with your followers in a way that they will understand.
  3. Listen to your audience: Social media is a way to connect with your voters, donors, and supporters on a one to one basis. By setting up listening strategies you can help yourself and keep updated on what is being said by you and how you can help participate in conversations to direct your campaign strategy.
  4. Use social advertising to expand your reach: Social advertising had been prov9796986_orig.pngen to make or break an election. This is a way of drawing in an audience when you want them to take action. socialMedia.jpg

How apps make Traveling Easier Today

I was so excited to come to Barcelona for a whole semester and I was willing to embrace all of the cultural differences and culture that came my way. I knew I had to be prepared that I was not going to be able to call my parents all the time, get an uber, or order late night pizza delivery. All of these seem like minor set backs, but these are things that very often in the US.

I decided that I needed to research certain popular social media apps that would be useful for my journey this semester. I found that instead of going over my data plan because I facedtimed my parents too much I decided to download the WhatsApp app. WhatsApp is an application for smart phones that uses the internet to make phone calls, text messages. This app is popular because it allows you to make phone calls and send messages by passing your wireless carrier’s SMS and MMS charges. I now no longer get all of these absurd charges from my AT & T international plan and now call my parents every day, free of charge! Another App that has been extremely useful is Hailo. Hailo is a substitute for Uber and it is a local taxi service in the Barcelona area. It is great for when I am coming home when the metro is closed and I want a safe, reliable taxi. You simply just download the app and submit your location and a licensed, reliable driver comes and gets you within only a few minuets. I have also read online that it can be much safer then simply hailing at random cab. Another thing I miss in the US is delivery food-but now with the help of the Glovo app I can get food delivered straight to my bed! Glovo is a delivery app that delivers almost anything you need delivered such as I am craving, or even medications from a local pharmacy. This service has people buy, pickup, and deliver any product right to your door step in Barcelona. I think I was impressed with this app because it’s not just a food delivery system app, but it’s like having your own personal errand runner. This is a great idea if you are too sick to even get out of bed you can have Glovo deliver the medications you need from your pharmacy it right to you. I have already recommended this app to almost all of my friends who are also studying abroad in the Barcelona.

We are lucky that we even have the apps available to help us make traveling and settling into another country much easier. My parents will never stop reminding me of the “old days” when they traveled and they had to find local telephone office in order to make an international telephone call back to the states. Now, with the advancement of technology and all of the apps that have been developed, all you need is to click a few buttons in order to get what you need. Life is so much easier now with current technology and all of the social media that helps us stay connected with one another. Who knows what wonderful improvements will be available in the next 10 years ??
